What Generation Am I? — The Quick Answer

Match the birth year to a generation's range. Using the widely-cited Pew Research boundaries: Millennials are 1981–1996 and Gen Z is 1997–2012, with Gen X before and Gen Alpha after.

Shortcut

find the generation whose year range contains your birth year

Generations by birth year

GenerationBirth years
Baby Boomers1946–1964
Generation X1965–1980
Millennials (Gen Y)1981–1996
Generation Z1997–2012
Generation Alpha2013–2024
Generation Beta2025–2039

Generation boundaries are cultural shorthand, not official definitions, and different researchers draw the lines in slightly different years. These ranges follow the Pew Research Center for Boomers through Gen Z, with Alpha and Beta per common demographic naming.

Pew ranges

Boomers to Gen Z

The Pew Research Center defines Boomers (1946–1964), Gen X (1965–1980), Millennials (1981–1996), and Gen Z (1997–2012). These are the most widely cited boundaries in the US and beyond.

Alpha & Beta

The newest generations

Generation Alpha (from 2013) and Generation Beta (from 2025) are more recent labels, popularised by social researcher Mark McCrindle, since the major institutions haven't fixed official ranges yet.

Note: Because the cut-off years are approximate, people born near a boundary (a 'cusp' — such as 1996–1997 between Millennials and Gen Z) often identify with either generation. Treat the label as a guide, not a rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

What generation am I if I was born in 1990?

A Millennial. The Millennial generation (also called Gen Y) runs from 1981 to 1996 under the widely-used Pew Research definition, so a 1990 birth year sits comfortably in the middle of it.

What years are Gen Z?

Generation Z is commonly defined as those born from 1997 to 2012 (Pew Research). People born right at the start, around 1997, sometimes feel like they straddle the Millennial/Gen Z boundary — a 'Zillennial' cusp.

Are generation years official?

No. There's no single official authority on generation boundaries, and different organisations use slightly different years. The Pew Research Center's ranges are the most widely cited, which is what this calculator uses for Boomers through Gen Z; the newest generations (Alpha, Beta) follow common demographic naming.

What comes after Generation Z?

Generation Alpha (born roughly 2013–2024), followed by Generation Beta (from 2025). These labels, coined by demographer Mark McCrindle, continue the alphabet using Greek letters now that the Latin alphabet's X, Y, and Z have been used.
