How to Work Out an Age Gap — The Quick Answer
Subtract the earlier birthday from the later one. The precise gap is best given as years, months, and days, because simply subtracting birth years can be off by nearly a year.
Shortcut
age gap = later birth date − earlier birth date
Why birth-year subtraction misleads
| Born A | Born B | True gap |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 2000 | Dec 2001 | 1 year 11 months |
| Dec 2000 | Jan 2001 | 1 month |
| Both say '1–2 years' by year | but differ hugely |
Two people 'born a year apart' by birth year can actually be anywhere from a day to nearly two years apart. Using the full dates — as this calculator does — gives the real figure.
How It Works
The Method
Exact calendar difference
Formula
gap = later birthday − earlier birthday expressed as whole years, months, and days
Variables
The precise gap
Counting whole years, then months, then leftover days gives the true difference — far more accurate than subtracting birth years, which ignores the months and days.
A single number
The gap is also shown as a total number of days, handy when you want one figure to compare or share. It's the exact count, leap years included.
Note: This measures the gap between the two birth dates, which stays constant for life. It isn't affected by today's date — two people always keep the same age gap.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the age gap between two people?
Subtract the earlier birthday from the later one and express the result in years, months, and days. Someone born in January 2000 and someone born in December 2001 have a gap of 1 year and 11 months — not the '1 or 2 years' you'd guess from the birth years alone.
Why not just subtract the birth years?
Because it ignores the months and days. Two people whose birth years differ by one could be anything from a day to almost two years apart. Using the full dates gives the exact gap, which is what this calculator does.
Does the order of the dates matter?
No. The calculator always reports the gap as a positive figure, so it doesn't matter which birthday you enter first. The age difference between two people is the same regardless of who is older.
Does the age gap change over time?
No — it's fixed for life. The gap between two birth dates never changes, so two people born three years apart will always be three years apart. That's different from each person's age, which increases every year.
