CGPA to Percentage Calculator

Convert CGPA to percentage and back.

Show details

Universities and exam boards convert CGPA to a percentage in different ways. This calculator gives you the three most common methods — CBSE's × 9.5 rule, a generic 10-point scale, and the US 4.0 scale — in both directions, with each formula clearly labelled so you use the right one.

CGPA to Percentage — The Quick Answer

There is no single universal formula — it depends on your grading scale. The most common conversions are CBSE's percentage = CGPA × 9.5, a 10-point scale's CGPA × 10, and a 4.0 scale's CGPA ÷ 4 × 100.

Shortcut

CBSE: % = CGPA × 9.5 | 10-point: % = CGPA × 10 | 4.0 scale: % = CGPA ÷ 4 × 100

Same CGPA, different methods

CGPAMethodPercentage
8.0CBSE × 9.576%
8.010-point × 1080%
3.24.0 scale ÷ 4 × 10080%
9.2CBSE × 9.587.4%

Always confirm the method your institution uses. The CBSE × 9.5 rule is specific to India's Central Board of Secondary Education and shouldn't be assumed for other boards or universities, which may publish their own conversion table.

How It Works

1
Choose the direction — CGPA to percentage, or percentage to CGPA
2
Pick the conversion method your institution uses
3
Enter your CGPA (or percentage)
4
The calculator applies that method's formula and shows the result
5
The exact formula used is shown underneath so you can double-check it against your official rule

The Methods

Three common conversions

Formula

CBSE: percentage = CGPA × 9.5 10-point: percentage = CGPA × 10 4.0 scale: percentage = (CGPA ÷ 4) × 100 (reverse each to go from percentage back to CGPA)

Variables

× 9.5

CBSE rule (India)

India's CBSE board multiplies the CGPA (out of 10) by 9.5, a figure derived from the average of grade-point boundaries. A 9.2 CGPA becomes 87.4%.

× 10

Generic 10-point scale

Many universities on a 10-point scale simply multiply by 10, so an 8.0 CGPA is 80%. Check whether your university actually uses this or publishes its own table.

÷ 4 × 100

US 4.0 scale

On a 4.0 scale, divide by 4 and multiply by 100: a 3.2 GPA is 80%. This is an approximation — US transcripts don't officially convert GPA to a percentage, so use it only as a rough guide.

Note: Because institutions differ, treat any CGPA↔percentage conversion as an estimate unless your own school publishes the exact formula. When applying somewhere, use the figure your transcript or board officially states.

Worked Example

An 8.0 CGPA under each method

1

CBSE × 9.5

8.0 × 9.5 = 76%.

2

10-point × 10

8.0 × 10 = 80%.

3

Reverse it

To go back: 76% ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA (CBSE), or 80% ÷ 10 = 8.0 CGPA (10-point).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert CGPA to a percentage?

It depends on your grading scale. Under India's CBSE rule you multiply CGPA by 9.5 (so 8.0 CGPA = 76%). On a generic 10-point scale you multiply by 10 (8.0 = 80%). On a US 4.0 scale you divide by 4 and multiply by 100 (3.2 = 80%). Pick the method your institution uses.

Why is the CBSE multiplier 9.5?

CBSE derived 9.5 by averaging the mid-points of the marks ranges for grades A1 to E across its five-subject system. It's a board-specific figure, not a universal constant, so it only applies to CBSE results — other boards and universities use their own conversions.

Is there one official CGPA-to-percentage formula?

No. Different boards and universities publish different conversion rules, and some don't convert at all. That's why this calculator makes you choose a method and shows which formula it used — so you can match it to your institution's official policy rather than assuming one global formula.

Can I convert a US GPA to a percentage?

Only approximately. US schools grade on a 4.0 scale and generally don't define an official GPA-to-percentage conversion, because letter grades map to ranges, not exact percentages. Dividing by 4 and multiplying by 100 gives a rough equivalent, but use your actual transcript percentages where an exact figure matters.
