Weighted Grade Calculator

Combine categories by their weight into one grade.

Show details

Most courses don't average all your scores equally — the final might be worth 50% while homework is worth 10%. Enter each category's score and weight, and this calculator combines them into your true overall grade, weighting every piece exactly as your syllabus does.

How to Calculate a Weighted Grade — The Quick Answer

Multiply each category's score by its weight, add those products, and divide by the total weight. Categories worth more pull the result toward their score.

Shortcut

weighted grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ (weight)

Fact-Checking Claims You May Have Seen Online

Your overall grade is just the average of your scores

False

Only if every category has the same weight. Scoring 100% on 10%-weighted homework helps far less than 100% on a 50%-weighted final. Weighting is the whole point.

Worked example

CategoryScoreWeight
Homework90%20%
Midterm80%30%
Final70%50%
Overall77%100%

If your weights don't add up to 100%, dividing by the total weight still gives a correct average of what you entered — but it usually means a category is missing, so the calculator flags it.

How It Works

1
Add a row for each graded category in your course
2
Enter the percentage score you got in that category and its weight from the syllabus
3
The calculator multiplies each score by its weight and adds the results
4
It divides by the total weight, so the answer is correct even if the weights don't add to exactly 100%

The Formula

A weighted average of your scores

Formula

weighted grade = (s₁·w₁ + s₂·w₂ + … + sₙ·wₙ) ÷ (w₁ + w₂ + … + wₙ)

Variables

sᵢ × wᵢ

Each category's contribution

A category's score multiplied by its weight. An 80% midterm worth 30% contributes 80 × 30 = 2400 to the weighted sum before dividing.

Σ wᵢ

Total weight

The sum of all the weights. Dividing by it turns the weighted sum back into a percentage. When weights total 100, this is just dividing by 100.

Note: This is a weighted average — the same idea behind GPA (which weights by credit hours) and many statistics. The weights decide how much each value counts toward the final figure.

Worked Example

Homework 90% (20%), Midterm 80% (30%), Final 70% (50%)

1

Multiply score by weight

90 × 20 = 1800; 80 × 30 = 2400; 70 × 50 = 3500.

2

Add the products

1800 + 2400 + 3500 = 7700.

3

Divide by total weight

Total weight = 20 + 30 + 50 = 100. Overall = 7700 ÷ 100 = 77%.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category's score by its weight, add all those products together, and divide by the total of the weights. For homework 90% (weight 20), midterm 80% (weight 30), and final 70% (weight 50): (1800 + 2400 + 3500) ÷ 100 = 77%.

What if my category weights don't add up to 100%?

The calculator divides by whatever your weights total, so the answer is still a correct weighted average of the categories you entered. But weights that don't sum to 100% usually mean a category is missing or mistyped, so the tool shows a gentle warning.

What's the difference between this and a GPA calculator?

They're the same kind of maths — a weighted average. A weighted grade calculator weights category scores by their syllabus percentages to find one course grade. A GPA calculator weights course grade points by credit hours to find your average across courses.

Can I use this to find my current grade mid-semester?

Yes. Enter only the categories that have been graded so far, using their weights. That gives your current standing. To then find what you need on a remaining final, take that figure to the Final Grade Calculator.
