Reading Time Calculator

How long will this take to read?

Show details

Paste a word count and this calculator estimates how long the text takes to read, at slow, average, or fast speeds — the figure blogs put in the '5 min read' badge, and one students use to plan revision and reading assignments.

How to Estimate Reading Time — The Quick Answer

Divide the word count by your reading speed in words per minute. The average adult reads about 200–250 wpm, so 1,000 words is roughly a 4–5 minute read.

Shortcut

reading time (minutes) = word count ÷ words per minute

Common word counts at average speed (230 wpm)

Word countReading time
500 words~2 min
1,000 words~4.5 min
2,000 words~9 min
5,000 words~22 min

Reading speed varies widely: 150 wpm for careful study, 230 for everyday reading, and 300+ for skimming. Choose the speed that matches how you'll actually read the text.

How It Works

1
Enter the word count of your text
2
Choose a reading speed — slow (150), average (230), or fast (300) words per minute
3
The calculator divides the word count by the speed to get the reading time
4
It also shows the same text at the other speeds so you can compare
5
For presentations, use the Speech Time Calculator instead — speaking is slower than reading

The Formula

Word count divided by reading speed

Formula

reading time (min) = word count ÷ reading speed (wpm)

Variables

reading speed

Words per minute

How many words you read in a minute. The average educated adult reads around 200–250 wpm for comprehension; careful study reading is slower (≈150), and skimming is faster (≈300+).

× 500 words

A page, roughly

A single-spaced page holds about 500 words, so a 3-page article of 1,500 words is around a 6.5-minute read at average speed.

Note: Reading time estimates assume straightforward prose. Dense technical material, unfamiliar vocabulary, or text with diagrams slows reading down — drop the speed for that kind of content.

Worked Example

A 1,500-word article

1

Average speed

1,500 ÷ 230 ≈ 6.5 minutes.

2

Slow, careful reading

1,500 ÷ 150 = 10 minutes.

3

Fast skim

1,500 ÷ 300 = 5 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

About 4–5 minutes at average reading speed (200–250 words per minute). At a careful study pace of 150 wpm it's closer to 7 minutes; at a fast skim of 300 wpm it's about 3.5 minutes.

What is the average reading speed?

For adults reading for comprehension, roughly 200–250 words per minute. Reading speed drops for difficult or technical text and rises when skimming. Children and second-language readers are typically slower.

Does this work for reading aloud or for speaking?

No — spoken delivery is slower, around 130–150 words per minute, and a comfortable presentation pace can be even slower. For speeches, scripts, or presentation scripts, use the Speech Time Calculator, which uses speaking speeds.

Why do some articles show a different 'read time' than this?

Most read-time badges assume a fixed speed (commonly 200–265 words per minute). This calculator lets you set the speed, so you can match the estimate to how fast you actually read rather than a single generic assumption.
