How Browser Microphone Permission and Level Meters Work

Permission is an explicit step

Web pages request microphone access through browser media APIs. The browser asks the user before providing an audio stream, and many browsers require a secure context such as HTTPS or localhost. The operating system may have a separate privacy permission.

A level meter can show that the browser receives changing audio samples. It cannot confirm that another application is using the correct microphone, that the audio is intelligible, or that a recording service will work.

Stop a test when finished

Camera and microphone tracks should be stopped after a check so the device indicator turns off and the browser releases the stream. If access fails, review site permissions, device selection, system privacy settings, and whether another application has exclusive use.

The local microphone check requests access only after you start and displays a level meter without saving audio. Use a device you trust and grant permission only when you understand what the page is doing.
