Choosing a Consistent Case for Prose and Code

Case is a convention, not a universal rule

Sentence case is often easy to scan in paragraphs and interface labels. Title case gives headings a more formal look, but styles differ on which short words remain lowercase. Uppercase can emphasize a short label, yet long uppercase passages are harder for many readers to scan.

In code, case can be part of the identifier itself. camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, and kebab-case each separate words differently. A project may choose a convention by language, framework, or existing codebase style.

Choose for the context

For prose, follow the publication's style guide and preserve names whose capitalization carries meaning. For identifiers, use the conventions of the language or repository, and avoid changing case when it could refer to a different variable or file on a case-sensitive system.

Bulk conversion is useful for consistency but cannot infer every acronym or proper noun. Review the result before using it. CalcPool's case editing utility makes common prose and identifier conversions reversible in the browser.
